The Cosmetology course at HLA covers all technical and practical subjects required by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Our curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive training in Hair Coloring, Permanent Waving, Chemical Straightening, Haircutting, Thermal and Wet Hairstyling—including formal, vintage, and bridal styles—Facials, Makeup, Waxing, Manicuring, Pedicuring, and Artificial Nails. Students use Milady CIMA, the newest digital learning platform in the beauty industry, for interactive theory lessons, online testing, and flexible learning tools. This ensures learners—including post-COVID students, adult learners, and students with IEPs—have the support and resources they need to succeed.
The course is structured into four progressive levels: Introductory/Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and an Advanced Practical Test Out phase. Each level builds upon the skills learned in the previous stage and introduces modern techniques across the five major subject areas: Cutting, Color, Chemical Texture, Styling, and Spa Services. This structure ensures students have ample opportunity to practice each technique and develop competency before advancing.
Strategic partnerships with Matrix®, Dermalogica®, Mirabella®, Cirepil®, and RefectoCil® provide students with advanced education on the latest procedures and salon techniques. Students also have opportunities throughout the year to participate in local theatrical productions, fashion shows, and community service events, where they can learn Special FX makeup, theatrical hairstyling, wig making, and artificial beard application.
Additionally, all cosmetology students rotate through HLA’s exclusive Business Training Course for salon and spa professionals, equipping them with essential skills to succeed in the business side of the beauty industry.
We also provide students with access to the Big Life Journal course, designed to help users view challenges as learning opportunities and build confidence in their ability to grow and improve—supporting both personal and professional development.
Our goal is to ensure students are fully prepared and confident when taking their licensing examination. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a Diploma, Proof of Training Document, and are qualified to take the California State Board Cosmetology examination. Upon passing the required written exam, the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology will issue a state license.
